Ammunition was started in 2001 by Sarah Lockhart and Neil Jolliffe who at the time were both working at underground music distributors in the UK. Having both worked closely with the emerging talent in the garage / underground scene at the time (people like Zinc, Wookie, Zed Bias, MJ Cole, Steve Gurley and El-B) it became apparent that there was a definite need for a company dedicated to pushing the more progressive end of UKG.
At the time Sarah had started Soulja (her nickname behind the counter at London's Blackmarket Ð where she still works to this day on Saturdays) and Neil had started 3 labels; Shelflife, Tempa and Vehicle.
"There was talk between us of starting a website based around this style of underground bass music and that's how we ended up forming Ammunition, through www.dubplate.net" (Neil).
Ammunition also manage Texture Records for Oris Jay, Bingo Beats for DJ Zinc, Big Apple Music and Sounds Of Da Future for Menta. We also recognised the need for a London monthly to help support the scene and started a night called Forward»
